In most cases, the septic tank will be located in the ground near your home. It will be connected to a sewer pipe that is a part of your home's plumbing system. You may also be able to find your septic tank by looking for the area of the yard with either healthier-looking grass or no grass at all. With the newer models of septic tanks, you should be able to locate the tank by looking for a visible access lid that should be just above ground level.
What happens when the septic tank is pumped?
When someone comes out to pump the septic tank, they will remove the access lid and connect the hose to their system, which will pump the sludge and sewage out of the tank. The process of having the septic tank pumped doesn't take long. You may be able to smell a foul smell even inside of the house just for a couple minutes when they are connecting to the septic tank. However, this odor will quickly dissipate.
How often should a septic tank be pumped?
In many cases, a septic tank will need to be pumped every couple of years. However, this time frame should be adjusted depending on the number of people who reside in the home and how much usage there is.
